Design & Technology

The department aims for students to become independent and creative in both designing and making. Practical work is integral to the teaching and learning of design and technology. By the end of KS3 we want students to be confident with a range of materials and processes and be able to combine these skills with an understanding of aesthetics, social and environmental issues, function and industrial practices. We want them to become autonomous creative problem solvers. At KS4 this is built on within the specific subject they have chosen.

The students receive 2 lessons of 60 minutes each fortnight in Year 7 and 8. We operate a carousel system where groups move teacher every term to a different subject focus area.

In Year 9 Product Design and Food Technology are available as options, studied for 4 lessons per fortnight with most students continuing to study least one of these subjects.

At KS4 Design and Technology is optional. We currently offer GCSE’s in Product Design and Food Technology and the uptake is very high (we have two groups for Product Design in both Year 10 and 11). These all follow the AQA Specification.

At KS5 we offer Product Design at A Level. We aim to increase our KS5 provision in the future particularly in the food area.
