Students Visit the Houses of Parliament
Over Spring term, groups of our Citizenship students from Years 8, 9 and 10 have visited the Houses of Parliament for a workshop and behind–the–scenes tour.
Their trip focused on the development of democracy in the UK. They were surprised to discover that although we can look around the House of Commons, the Queen is still not allowed to set foot there – dating back to King Charles I's attempt to arrest Members of Parliament who disagreed with him in 1642.
They were interested to learn about the Suffragettes who locked themselves to the building as part of their campaign for votes for women, 100 years ago. And they were invited to witness democracy in action today – hearing debates on subjects from the government response to terrorist groups, to age limits for online games.
