The Parent Alliance aims to build strong links between home and school and to encourage parents to become more involved in the school community. Its purpose is to:
- provide a community that involves all parents and carers of Haverstock students.
- enhance links with parents/carers, so that home and school work well together.
- help to support parents/carers in understanding new developments in education and the current secondary school system.
- enable parents to be consulted about school developments.
- provide adult and family learning opportunities and widen participation in education, helping to further develop Haverstock as a learning community.
- provide opportunities to celebrate student achievement.
Each year there are two Parent Action Days as well as Parents’ Evenings and progress reports sent home so that parents are aware of their children’s progress and can be involved in the target setting process.
The Parent Alliance organises workshops and discussion sessions: ‘Havachat’, designed to help parents to understand what is going on in school. These have often been practical sessions covering topics such as how we teach maths, how we support children with learning difficulties, helping children make appropriate choices - the pathways in school – and open discussions about topics such as bringing up teenagers. .We have run sessions consulting parents about the school’s anti-bullying and homework policies. New Year 7 parents have been invited to meet more experienced Haverstock parents to help them to get to know the school. Many of our parents have also become involved in the daily work of the school, working with Jackie Williams, our Parent Volunteer Co-ordinator. If you are interested and able to spare some hours for voluntary work in the week, contact Jackie via the school office.
We also provide opportunities for parents to develop their own learning via ICT courses and parenting programmes as well as information about managing money and access to a variety of other courses.
We have family link workers who liaise particularly with specific groups of parents: our Albanian and Kosovan community; our Bangladeshi families; our Somali community and parents from the Congolese and Afghan communities. As part of the Parent Alliance, these staff meet regularly with groups of parents and organise specific sessions for them to help them to understand different aspects of the school and to support their children’s education.
Parent Alliance meetings take place on the first Wednesday of every month. They are informal and run by parents working in partnership with staff colleagues to share ideas and plan actions on improving aspects of school life for our students. Look out for more information and a programme of events in Haverstock News. The Parent Alliance is always looking for parents and carers who would like to get actively involved in the school.
We run a very successful School Uniform and Recycled Clothes Exchange, managed by Jackie Williams and our volunteers.
In addition, there are social events and opportunities for fundraising organised throughout the year. Families have enjoyed ice skating at Somerset House and Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, barbecues and art exhibitions, bowling, visiting the London Dungeon and most recently, an end of year family soft ball tournament.
