Haverstock students LOVE reading, and so World Book Day is always a highlight of our year. This time, WBD officially fell on 2 March. a day of industrial action when not all students were in school. But we weren't going to let that spoil the fun. So we created our own Haverstock World Book Day on Monday so everyone could get involved.
Our Library was a hub of excitement, with quizzes, games, goodies and giveaways. And of course, it wouldn't be World Book Day without a host of literary characters in school – with prizes awarded for the best by our expert panel of Sixth Form judges!
Read on to see who won our 6 word story competition, then scroll down to see how many literary characters you recognise in the pictures below!
6 Word Story Competition Winners
‘He lied, and so she believed.’
– by Asma Nunow Year 10
Competition judge Ms Gwinnett says ’I liked how this one is like an entire soap opera in six words. It tackles the big themes of lies and deceptions, and perhaps hints at a critique of patriarchy.’
‘A dress: bloody. All that’s left.’
– by Maddison Forde Year 10
Ms Gwinnett comments, ‘Some excellent punctuation use here creates a real feeling of drama. Like all good six word stories, it hints at a whole narrative that we are just glimpsing here.’
‘Mystery meat for sale. Missing people.’
– by E Mulvey Year 11
Ms Gwinnett says, ‘The implied relationship between the two sentences is subtle and effective, and satisfyingly creepy.’
‘Turtles, fish, dolphins, sea… then plastic.’
– by Maya Hollman Year 8
‘This short story has a clear moral message and an effective use of a list with a twist at the end.’
Our Year 12 English Literature students also judged the Staff 6 Word Story Competition,
‘I can’t. I will. I did.’ by Ms Shah Farrelly
‘Dad, uncle, brother, husband... how disturbing.’ by Ms Smith
‘Laughing, she lit the fuse... BOOM!’ by Ms Butler
